Materials as the physical base of modern package design, are changing rapidly with the development of science and technology and society. Materials are not only visible and tangible. It can even be smelled. Materials, tangible or intangible, even our ideology can be employed as a medium to express feelings. By employing the properties of materials and emotional language, the inner beauty and visual beauty of package is displayed. And exquisite design is advantageous to marketing.Firstly, the thesis takes the package design of cigarettes for instance. By introducing the form and shape of cigarettes package, the cultural connotations in the package are analyzed.Secondly, the perception, symbol and meaning of the materials packing cigarettes are analyzed by using the semantics of design. Then, the writer of the present thesis discusses the important role materials play in cigarette package from the angles of art and psychology by analyzing the relations between packaging and emotions, functions, and materials. The inside and outside factors that effect sales volumes are discussed as well.Thirdly, with the case of cigarette package desinging, the writer of the present thesis explores the connotations of package materials'color, modeling and craft. Coupled with the survey of the market of cigarette consumers, their mentality and a good number of factors that influence cigarette package designing, a comprehensive study will be presented for the purpose of exploring how cigarette package can be more effective and more reasonable in displaying and transmitting the marketing idea of the manufacturer. And the influences of materials on cigarette culture and marketing are expounded as well.The above analysis and discussion will guide manufacturers and designers to more deeply understand the change and development of market; to study the forms and materials of packaging and consumers'psychological demands. By doing this, the level of package designing will be improved and consumers will be prompted to purchase commodity. Thus, common interests of the society, the manufacturer and consumers will be achieved.
