Distribution Automation (DA) is one importmant aspect of power system modernization process. DA could improve significantly reliability and economy of city power system, to provide power of high quality. Distribution automation terminal and switchgear are the basic links of DA. With the emergence of new technology and improvement of grid operation requirement, development, designment and application of perfect terminal and switchgear are becoming more importmant. Application of terminal and switchgear in city distribution network is in-depth analysis in this paper, and providing a detailed design scheme.Firstly, the meaning of DA research is introduced, and the importance of DA system design and construction is emphasized. Furthermore system components of DA are introduced, and DA development status especially status of terminal and switchgear is discussed. Meanwhile process and characteristic of DA planning and design are studied.Secondly, all kinds of new DA technology and application are introduced and compared. Preliminary design basis of 10kv and below DA terminal and switchgear is offered. At the meantime based on the actual situation of Guangzhou distribution network, design principles and range of the better technology, economy and practicality are provided to offer basis for reference in detailed design.Then setting the actual situation of design area in Tianhe for example, needs analysis of DA construction are done, and three-remote, two-remote and overhead line construction area are optimized by comparing and researching. Results of Tianhe distribution network after first stage DA construction are summarized.Finally, DA reconstruction scheme of loading switch, DA terminal structural design and technical requirements in swith room and integrated room are maked based on the actual characteristics of design area. At the same time, device types and its performance requirements of wireless data acquisition, operating power solutions and configuration requirements of DA terminal and switchgear, function design of overhead line fault analysis are maked, too. And the whole preliminary design scheme of DA terminal and switchgear are formatted, with their configuration requirements, installation structure requirements, performance and technical requirements. Equipment selection problems are solved, too. This paper is meaningful in both theory and application, providing references for DA system research, design and construction.
