As to the development of national economy and the ever-improving living quality of people, demand of electric power is stronger and stronger. At the same time, standards about power quality and reliability are much more strictly and higher. Thus distribution automation and smart grid is the trends of distribution network.Distribution automation is a system which can real-time monitor, coordinate and control electric equipments connected on distribution networks remotely. It is a new technology developed in recent years, and it is the application of computer and communication technology on distribution power grid. Civilized countries such as European countries, USA, Japan are applying distribution automation technology. In China some electric power enterprises have also tried distribution automation. It has been improved that distribuion automation can raise up reliability and efficiency of power grid, improve power quality, diminish working strength, and release ability of equipment. So it can make profit both for utility and power company.In this paper, applications of distribution automation are investigated on big cities, the success and fail on applying distribution automation are analyzed, then considering the process of application of distribution automation on Zhuhai power grid and current condition of Sanya distribution network, application schemes of distribution automation on Sanya power grid in next five years are proposed from following aspects:configuration of automation system, control center of distribution network, information system integration, terminal of distribution automation, reinforcement of circuit breakers. Finally some advices are proposed for Sanya distribution automation system.
