Large-scale cultural and sport events gather a large crowd of people and vehicles around venues in a short period of time, which would cause a series of complicated traffic problems and contradiction. For traffic planners and administrators, how to keep transport free in the core area of events and relief the pressure exerted on routine transport is a question. On that case, this paper carried out research on traffic organization and coordination in the core area of large-scale cultural and sport events, which is originated from the "973" program of fundamental researches in China.The definition, classification and traffic characteristics of large-scale cultural and sport events were analyzed firstly. Through traffic supply and demand analysis and the superposition of event induced transport and urban routine transport, the function, scope and characteristics in the core area of events were studied. Based on traffic psychology, economics, behavioral theory, the traffic impact analysis and assessment of large-scale cultural and sport events was carried out. The spatial and temporal distribution of traffic flow in the core area of events was proposed.In order to avoid the peak superposition of event induced transport and urban routine transport, traffic organization strategy, traffic demand management was put forward for different traffic impact scopes. According to traffic modes for participants of large-scale cultural and sport events, public transport organization was carried out by traffic planning and organization for buses taxis and subway; while traffic organization for private transport mainly refers to the scale and layout planning of parking lot, import and export. Thus, the special traffic organization for public transport, taxi, pedestrian and static transport of large-scale cultural and sport events were carried out respectively. Then the coordination of traffic organization was evaluated by the matching degree of traffic demand and supply, and the orderly degree of traffic flow in the core area of large-scale cultural and sport events.Finally, the method was applied in the case of traffic organization and coordination in the core area of Guangdong Olympic Center in peak day of the 16th Asian Games, which was hold in Guangzhou in 2010. It developed the method of traffic demand and supply analysis, traffic impact analysis, traffic organization optimization and coordination in the core area of large-scale cultural and sport events.Though in this paper, the theory and method of traffic organization and coordination was presented according to the 16th Asian Games, it is equally suitable for other homogeneous large-scale cultural and sport events.
