Currently, much attention has been paid to smart grid from the whole world and it is the core of modernization of power grid in China. As the link of power generation and users, source of operation data in power grid and the execution unit, substation plays a great role in the safe operation and reliability of the whole grid so smart substation must function in the whole construction of smart grid to meet the requirement of smart grid. Selection of main equipment becomes the core of smart substation and has great significance for the construction of smart grid.This paper firstly proposes the program of life-cycle management of main equipment in smart substation, which establishes the identification system including its establishment program and implementation program of coding. As an example, identification system coding is made for the main equipment in an actual project. Secondly, analysis of main equipment in smart substation is made on the operation and management conditions during life-cycle. Also equipment ID is established for the coded equipment. Finally, life-cycle equipment management is analyzed from economy and feasibility.
