A Study On Form Transformation And Space Analysis Of Tianjin Former Japanese Concession Area

The former Japanese Concession area in Tianjin, which is characterized by the small blocks, compact layout and quiet surroundings, exhibits unique style differing from the other concessions. Compared to the British, French and Italian concessions, few focus on it because of few fine historic buildings. With the rapid development, many problems have gradually appeared, such as poor-quality buildings, inadequate infrastructure, disordered land-use, the complex population composition and so on. Now this area has been surrounded by high-density urban space, and some parts have been replaced with new buildings.Located in the center area and adjacent to the downtown district, the former Japanese Concession should not only satisfy the needs for residence but also other multi-faceted functions, by fully excavating its historic, cultural and architectural resources. The protection, utilization and renewal, as well as the function transformation should base on the retailed investigation and analysis of the area, in order to remain the original features, the urban form and the spatial characteristics. This paper pays attention to excavating the inherent historic, social, cultural and economic value so as to raise concerns on better protection and utilization of the former Japanese Concession in future.This paper makes systematic analysis of the blocks, streets and the building groups of the former Japanese Concession from perspective of the space and form, which can become the foundation of the reasonable protection, utilization and renewal of it.This article has five chapters.
