The modern buildings in Yantaishan are integral parts of Modern Building Complex in Yantaishan which is a key historical site under state protection. At present, there are totally 24 modern buildings reserved, most of which were built in the middle and late 19st century and used to be consulate buildings of different countries or belong to the East Sea Customs.Combined historical map and archival documents research, this paper makes textual criticism on the construction period, historical function and whole scale of the modern buildings, which improves the cultural relics files and data. Based on the on-site investigation, the next part of this paper studies four aspects architectural characteristics of the buildings from macroscopic to microcosmic:the site selection, the morpha of building cluster, the appearance and detail of single building, the evolution of the Veranda style, and analyses the history information and cultural significance of the characteristics. In the last part, it mainly retrospects and prospects on protection and utilization of the modern buildings. The history of modern buildings in Yantaishan can be divided into five phases, which reflects the social background the city construction and the port's development of modern Yantai and records the influence of western architecture style, material and structure system to northern China from the middle of 19th century to the early 20th.The conclusion of this paper provides very important clue for the Conservation Planning of Modern Building Complex in Yantaishan, fills the blank in the study of the history of Chinese modern architecture, hoping to make a slight contribution to study and perservation of Yantai modern buildings and even the architectural heritage of modern China.
