The vegetable-selling market is closely related to catering culture and daily life that Chinese people attach importance to. Traditional interior vegetable-selling market does not tally with the development of modern city, with many pending problems, such as vague partition of functional areas, disorder of transportation stream line, imperfection of supporting facilities, and sanitation’s troubling problems which disturb ambient scenery and environment. In addition, due to inadequate attention paid to its architectural form and appearance design, the traditional vegetable-selling market cannot integrate into the consistently updating districts of the city. However, the traditional vegetable-selling market is not only a place for shopping, but also an important functional place for social life, bearing a city’s history and context.The paper is divided into three parts. The first part is fundamental research, with interpretation of relevant concepts, analysis and summing-up of the history and current situation of researches home and abroad, and sorting-out of on-site design bases and many vegetable-selling markets of the same kind. The second part expounds on how deep design and exploration are carried out with creation in terms of function and aesthetic. In accordance with the requirement of functional development and value structure of the traditional vegetable-selling market’s architectural space in current development process of modern metropolitan, the promotion of environmental function and value of the traditional-selling market is researched under its era condition in this part. In terms of function and environmental influence, the link between the vegetable-selling market and the metropolitan’s development is echoed. In terms of the context’s sustainability, the possibility of value promotion of public buildings is explored. The third part is summing-up of the whole process of creation and design, and the outlook of the design and development of the vegetable-selling market.The design in the paper is launched on the spot by taking the removal of Tangjiawan vegetable-selling market in Huangpu District, Shanghai city as an opportunity. The design’s purpose is to design a vegetable-selling market which can bear multifunction and whose quality will be improved, and create a public space which can generate positive effects on the block and the city. In the process of research, the paper expounds on the process and tendency of development and evolution of the vegetable-selling market and looks for the way in which public space benefits citizens’ daily life. Through research and design, the author argues that the vegetable-selling market can adapt with the era’s development, maintain its vitality, and become the attraction point and catalyst of the block’s prosperity.
