The development of industrialized society has not only spread the modern technological methods but also promoted the 'international-style' architecture. Modern technological methods deal with different environmental conditions unitarily, which has made the principle of architectural activities deviated from or even opposed to the natural laws. Natural conditions have great restriction to and influence on the formation of traditional architectural form, among which the climatic factors effect fundamentally the diversification of architectural form. In order to develop suitable modern architectural form, it is very effective to use traditional experience for reference. The Southwest region of China has complex natural and geographical features, changeable regional climate and a large variety of nations. The traditional architectural form in dry-and-cold and dry-and-hot regions of Sichuan Province and Yunnan Province adapts to the regional climate and shares the general character of surmounting geographical confinement. Though the analysis of traditional architectural climate concepts, this thesis elaborates the space and technological forms of traditional architectural patterns in the dry-and-cold and dry-and-hot regions of Sichuan Province and Yunnan Province with architectural typological methods, and puts forward an architecture pattern language for modern architectural design in these regions with special climate conditions. This thesis aims at providing a practical method for studies on regional architectural forms by making the research from traditional and modern aspect. The research is helpful to advocate and promote the ecological principle of "design combining with the nature".
