Jiageng Style" has played an important role in the modern architecutre of Xiamen. What's more, it could be considered as an indiscerptible part of modern culture in Xiamen city. Specialized in certain historical and geographical circumstances, "Jiageng Style" which has combined vernacular heritage with exotic impact would be valued fundamentally by providing a significant supplement to the reserch for the Chinese Renaissance Architecture which is circumscribed within those prominent characters of northern "Beijing Style".Methodologically, On-the-spot investigation, Stucturalism and Comparative method will be exployed. The thesis is devoted to demonstrate the evolutionary process of "Jiageng Style" from political, economical, social and cultural aspects. Campus plans, architectural technology, philosophy and characters of different periods will be analysised within the background of Chinese modern architectural history.Campus plans of "Jiageng Style" are in harmony with nature, not only by unrestrained plans but also by careful arrangement of traditional garden. It neutralizes the solemn appearance of symmetric buildings. The architeture of "Jiageng Style" consists at least three stages: "Malay Archipelago Period", "Localism Period"and "National Form Period". It's the result of direct collision of Chinese-western architectural culture. With patriotic enthusiasm, Jiageng laid his emphasis on nationalism and regionalism, going out of his way to preserve local culture for further development. Nowadays since "Critical Regionalism" and preservation of tradional culture begin to beget people's attention, "Jiageng Style" definitely has its positive and realistic significance. But it only symbolizes a start point of the research for national expression of Chinese architecture instead of a terminal point. What's more, it is the beginning of mutual communication of Chinese-western architecture instead of the final stage. To preserve and enhance traditional heritage would be a perpetual topic for architects. In order to find a dialectical method of how to inherit such a big fortune, more detailed studies of "Jiageng Style" are needed in the future.
