Optical fiber and network are one of the development trends in automation of electric power system. The integrated design of electrical fault ?recording and analysis device is tending towards opening, interconnecting, and distributing. The structure of conventional fault recorder is difficult to satisfy the requirement of modern electric power system. Distributed fault recorder overcomes many weaknesses of traditional centralized one. Now it has become the trend of development in the future. On the other hand, DSP has been used widespread in many fields because of its powerful digital computing and processing capacity. It is undoubtedly many performances of fault recorder will break through for using DSP in the modification and development of it. Consequently, development of a set of novel distributed fault recorder based on DSP technology has considerable practical and economic value. In this paper, the design scheme and aims of the fault recorder are given based on analysis of other fault recorder. Then the paper gives the design idea and feasible method of many functional modules in the data acquisition unit of this system. Every part of the system is designed in details, including many functional modules, such as controlling module, communicating module, and synchronizing high-speed data acquisition module. Then the paper introduces the development of transient signal-generator. In addition, many important technologies that must be consider in the system development process are studied and designed extensively in this paper. The tools for program and debug the software of thisIIdevice include MS Visual C++ 6.0, Turbo C 3.0, Masm32, NuMega DriverStudio 2.0, Code Composer Studio 4.10, and DSP emulator.
