Fault recorders are widely used in power systems for the purpose of faulttransient process recording, which provide rich source of data for fault analysis andprotective relays testing. However, the current fault recording and analysis softwareare rather unsatisfactory in fault and relay characteristics analysis, which don’t usethe vast recorder data effectively. To solve this problem, this paper studies the faultrecorder data analynazing methods and develops an protective relays analysis system.First of all, the paper studies recorder data format conversion, file reading andmanagement, designs the fault electrical signal reproduction and comprehensiveanalysis platform. Given the calculation of the electrical features of signals indifferent frequency band, the paper advances sampling rate normalization based ondata interpolation. Also, it studies proper symmetric component analysis andharmonic parameter estimation algorithms to guarantee accuracy.Secondly, the paper analyzes the operation and configuration case of power linesand transformers, and studies line fault analysis algorithms(including fault start,selection and location), power line and transformer protection algorithms. At the sametime, dynamic simulation and analysis modules of protective relay component aredeveloped to perform relay characteristics analysis. In addition, a new method ofmagnetizing inrush current identification is proposed based on the grid variance curveof the transformer differential current waveform analysis. Simulation test shows thefeasibility and effectiveness of this method.Finally, protective relay characteristics analysis platform design procedures andworkflow are given, plus platform interfaces and analysis capabilities of the system.The protective relay characteristic analysis system proposed in this paper takesrecorded fault signals as input, runs digital dynamic simulations of substation mainprotection devices, analysis its action characteristics and shows the datas processinggraphically. This system provides pratical tool for fault analysis and protective relaymalfunction troubleshooting, helps to improve the correct action rate, operation levelof protection devices, and ensure the power systems operats stablely.
