Mechanical product conceptual design is a complex decision full of innovation,multi-solution,approximation,experience,integration,which is a crucial phrase in product design. Intelligent decision support system (IDSS) for product conceptual design is a computer system integrated with decision support technology,artificial intelligence and the theory of product conceptual design,which is a necessary means to provide decision support for conceptual design and also is an urgent problem to be resolved in mechanical and automobile industry of China.In this paper,automobile conceptual design is taken as an example of research field and the method of problem solving in this domain is studied on. Being armed at the characters of variant design for complex mechanical products,the combination of case-based reasoning (CBR) and rule-based reasoning (RBR) is adopted as the problem solving strategy. The implementation technology of CBR is deeply researched on. The method of case representation and organization,the indexing of case,the algorithm of case retrieval and the transformation of case are designed.The concrete development technology of IDSS for automobile conceptual design is researched on in this paper. The system is composed of knowledge system,problem processing system and human-computer interface. The implementation methods of first order logic-based model representation and model integration are presented. Appropriate methods of knowledge representation are designed for different kinds of knowledge in mechanical design. Object-oriented technology is applied to build the model base and knowledge base. The method of multi-base is presented. An appropriate problem generating system is designed,which transforms the design intentions into a decision problem. Distributed problem solving (DPS) strategy is adopted in problem solving system. The system architecture based on multi-agent,the coordination method of agents based on contract net protocol and the data communication technology based on blackboard are designed.The rapid prototype method of software engineering is applied and an IDSS prototype for automobile conceptual design is built,by which the correctness,suitability and feasibility of the development strategy and technology presented in the paper are proved.
