Harmonic gear drive is a new- type drive technique that having developed in recent decades. It transfers motion and power depending on the flexible deformation of the flexspline. For this reason, the design of the harmonic gear drive system is complex. It is inefficiency and costly to design in traditional technology. As a new kind of design method, virtual design can accomplish parameterize design, 3D modelling, analysis and detection, etc. It can find limitations of products in the designing phase. We can modify and improve the design, enhance the efficiency and quality of the design, and recduce the cost accordingly, the application of the virtual design technology in the design of harmonic gear drive system is significance.Through the development of UG, the design-calculation module in this paper achieves the parameterized design of the harmonic gear derive system and makes 3D entity modeling. This module uses VC++ as the compiling environment, connects the design-calculation programme with the graphic interface of UG by the the develop module, the users select"harmonic gear design " in the main menu of UG, then enter into this design module ,the users can complete to choose harmonic gear drive system model and import the initial parameters of design . Having been confirmed, these basic parameters are passed by UG to the design programme programed by C and VC++ , and then the calculation of these parameters are realized. Finally the calculation results including each occludent parameters and geometry dimensions can be gained. According to these geometry dimensions, the files and drawing operation functions supplied in UG are transfered by the programme, 3D geometry models of each section in harmonic gear drive system are exported, and these basic designed data are sent to the info window.In the process of the design-calculation module, some parameters are obtained according to the experiential formula, so the ultima results need to be analysed further. In this article, the pivotal section --flexspline gear is made finite element analysis by finite element analysis module of UG. The analysis model of this module adopts 3D model of flexspline gear founded in the design module, in the preprocess the flexspline gear has been simplified reasonably, material, load and boundary condition defined, the model meshed, then through finite element analysis, the results of deformation and stress sum can be obtained, at the same time the results can been export from the postprocessor. According to the analysis results the insufficiency of the designstructure can be found, which provides the referrence for the modification of the design structure. This article brings forword a new finite element analysis method of flexspline gear, moreover, it discusses the other analysis methods and makes an expectation .The parameterized automatic design, 3D modeling and finite element analysis in virtual desigh of harmonic gear drive system have been mainly realized in the process of research .
