Currently our country is experiencing a rapid economic development. The government has identified tourism as one of its most important industries for stabilizing and boosting the economy. Within a short period of time, most major famous tourist sites witnessed a large-scale reconstruction and reorganization leading to a "quantitative" change. For its positive respects, these constructions improved the quality of service and enhanced the capacity of accommodation, In addition, these progresses have promoted the growth of the tourism industry and created more opportunities for the architectural work. However, it should be noted that many scenery sites came from the continuing efforts of our ancestors during thousands of years' history. They incorporated the profound philosophical theory and aesthetics ideas into the recreation of landscape, bringing rich content into the nature. These sites with such special meanings are our invaluable treasures. Under the current period of construction, what attitudes the architects should take and what role they should perform in the architectural work for tourist sites are the focus of this paperThis paper is based on the study of Mt. JiuHua and mainly discusses the characteristics of local nature environment and built environment. It also evaluated many results of nearly twenty years' development of Mt. JiuHua. On the basis of some architecture practices, the specific design strategy is reviewed. The first chapter systematically described the geographical and humanity environment. Through comparison, the spatial features of the built environment are summarized. Further in the second chapter the local tradition of vernacular architecture and the corresponding culture have been studied. The third chapter discussed the negative effects of recent developments from five aspects to emphasize the fact that those damages limited the quality improvement of architecture. Through systematical analysis and review of the previous chapters, the ideal design strategies were proposed in the fourth chapter. Finally the retrospection of the past practices raised the speculation beyond the architectural design. Those issues deserve special study under current situation. Instead of providing a definitive solution, this paper actually introduced an urgent and long-term question. The aim of this study is to draw wide attention from the society so that the public and the architectural profession will be guided and regulated by law, ethic education and self control to avoid the waste of resources due to duplicated construction or damage to environment for short-term interest. The win-win situation for tourism economical development and landscape resource protection finally will be realized.
