| The Eastern Mountain vernacular area is a land abundant in wonderfularchitecture and culturral heritage, but few studies on the preservation of sucharchitecture have been done. Based on the characteristics of the easternmountain vernacular architecture and its unique geographic advantage, thispaper proposes a series of strategies on the preservation and development ofthe vernacular architecture. The author not only concerns about the concretemeasures of the preservation and development, but also advocates the long-term security system based on the development of the local economy. It isbelieved that, as a continuation of the vernacular culture, the preservation ofthe vernacular architecture should cover the whole vernacular environment.Accordingly, the development strategy of the vernacular architecture shouldbe a sustainable one based on preservation. This paper focuses on thearchitecture of Sixi Town, Taishun County of Zhenjiang Province, which ischaracterized by two lounge bridges with an history over a hundred years anda large amount of outstanding vernacular architecture. Unfortunately, thisancient town is losing its historical charm in the process of fast urbanizationin recent years. To solve these problems, the author suggests renovating themain street in the ancient town based on the preservation of the LoungeBridges and other vernacular architecture on the one hand; while on the otherhand, strengthening the infrastructure so as to improve the local people'sliving environment and living standard. In such a way, there will be a boomof the local tourism and economy. |
