Thermal stress and temperature control is crucial in mass concrete structure. Roller compacted concrete dam is similar to concrete dam, and also has temperature cracks. The thermal stress of RCC dam is different from concrete dam' s, and in order to get correct results, these different characteristics must be considered. At present, the high RCC arch dams above 100m have a tendency to development. Accordingly study on the thermal stress of RCC arch dam has practical importance.Arch dam is slice and it is sensitive to the change of surrounding temperature and water temperature. The change of temperature in the dam is big, and except for the dam crest is free, the other three surfaces are restraint by base rock, and so, the big thermal stress in arch dam probably occurs. Therefore the construction process and material properties of RCC arch dam must be simulated precisely so as to take reasonable engineering measures to reduce the thermal stress in the dam.In this article, according to three-dimension finite element theory and heat conduction theory, the computation program of simulating thermal stress field of RCC arch dam during construction and service is researched and developed. In computation the effect of thermal insulation, elastic modulus, creep degree and autogenous volume change along with age , the progress of pouring by layer, work suspension in summer, the change of air temperature, heat preservation , water cooling, and water storage,by stages on temperature field are considered. Based on the construction schedule and thermodynamics parameters of certainRCC arch dam, the temperature and stress fields during construction and service are simulated and computed, and also the computation results are compared with the practical observation data ; The comparison results show that the computation results are reasonable. The research fruits in this article can provide the temperature isoline map of crown cantilever section and central longitudinal section of the dam, the stress isoline map of crown cantilever section and upstream and downstream surfaces of the dam, the maximal and minimal stress distribution map in dam abutment along with the height of dam, the maximal and minimal stress table of typical nodes and the maximal and minimal stress table in different elevations, and also provide reference basis for taking relative temperature control measures in the design and construction of RCC arch dam.
