Pipeline is one of the most popular transportation equipments, has its particular advantages in transporting liquid, gas and serum. Pipeline is considered the most safe and economic method in the transportation of energy. However accidents may occur in pipelines, like other engineering facilities. With the development of pipeline transportation, the increase of amount and age, the unexpected erosion, abrasion and disfigurement by natural or artificial reasons, the accident of leak becomes more and more frequent. Based on incomplete survey, until 1990, there are totally 628 accidents in pipelines in our country during nearly 20 years. The accidents most occurred in the early stage and the later stage after these pipelines was brought into use, especially the late stage, the possibility of accidents increases greatly with the increment of pipeline's service time, most pipelines in our country have been brought into service for more than 20 years, and all entered in the dangerous period, so efficient techniques must be developed to farthest reduce the possibility of accidents.Aim at the problems mentioned above, we studied the distribution of temperature field of buried pipelines in this paper, based on these studies we ulteriorly analyzed the temperature field's distribution under conditions of pipeline leak, and calculated the leakage through analyzing the changes of temperature field around the leak point.Finite element methods was used in calculating the temperature field of the soil around the buried pipelines and the temperature field under conditions of pipeline leak. In emulating analyzes, a kind of finite element analyzing software "ANSYS" was used, the results showed a preferable match with the practical measurements. Although we used the desert conditions as a example in this paper, methods of solving problem has its versatility, they can be used in other circumstances. This research can offer some scientific references not only for detecting the leak of buried pipelines, but also for the arrangement of fiber sensors in leak detecting. The study we've done in the paper also has its significance in preventing the buried pipelines' leak and the spread of the leakage,...
