The Study Of Transportation Demand Management And Its Application In Beijing Olympic Transportaion

Social economic modernization, urbanization, and motonization that makegreat progress of Beijing transportation. While, many serious traffic problemshad been brought almost at the same time. Transportation demandmanagement (TDM) is one of the most cost effective solutions to transportproblems, such as congestion, traffic pollution, etc. It is the disequilibrium between transportation supply and demand thatbrings the problems. The tradition solutions are mostly increasing the supply,and they are passivity, on the contrary, TDM measures are positive, and theyemphasize particularly on the leading, adjust and management to trafficdemand, in this way, the traffic load and the congestion would reduce effectly. TDM measures emphasize the movement of people and goods, ratherthan motor vehicles, and so gives priority to public transit, ridesharing andnonmotorized travel, particularly under congested urban conditions.One of theaim of the TDM is reducing the travel amount, the other one is making thedistributing of time is in equilibrium with space. This paper summarizes the history and present of TDM measures athome and abroad, and the experiences and lessons of TDM in Olympic gamesholded by other cities. The paper also builds the theory system of TDMstrategies, and confirms the define, connotation and hiberarchy, andpreliminary studies of the theory and the operation mechanism of TDM, andanalyses the instance of representative TDM measures concretely, at lastpresents the six predominances of TDM. Based on the facts mentioned above,the paper laies a practice and theory foundation for framing the TDM strategieswhen Beijing government will hold Olympic games at 2008. Based on the experiences and the theory of the TDM, and integrating thecharacteristic of Beijing traffic, the paper brings forward method structure ofOlympic Games TDM of Beijing, and according to the data of surveying andstudying, puts forward the concrete strategies scheme of solving the Olympic IIAbstractGames traffic problem, have carried on sensitiveness analysis to the schemeresult.
