The automation of a substation is a integrated technology of many different specialties, based on microcomputer, which realizes not only the full-scale rebuilding of relay protection, control manner, measuring way, the module of communication and the management module for the traditional substation but also a great change of running manner and management for electric power system grid. With development of technology for substation automation, neither the traditional relay protection or monitoring device lonely nor the communication way of bay units is very difficult for the development and for the increase of real-time data of monitoring system. Therefore, this paper presents CANBUS technology and designs a common hardware platform to implement protecting and monitoring functions. Considering the special demand of substation's bay unit and the characteristic of CAN2.0B protocol, a high effective, reliable, and well functional protocols is formulated to fulfils the demand of real time of system.
