The automation of a substation is a integrated technology of many different specialties, based on microcomputer ,which realizes not only the full-scale rebuilding of relay protection, control manner, measuring way, the module of communication and the management module for the traditional substation but also a great change of running manner and management for electric power system grid. With development of technology for substation automation, neither the traditional relay protection or monitoring device lonely nor the communication way of bay units is very difficult for the development and for the increase of real-time data of monitoring system. Therefore, this paper presents ETHERNET technology and designs a common hardware platform to implement protecting and monitoring functions.This article briefly introduces the hardware composition, structure characteristics and software implement of the communication network which belongs to the integrated automatic substation . In order to meet the real-time request of substation protection , the MCUs corporate in the protect-control module, communication-monitor module and keyboard-display module. At the same time, the protocol of communication is made. In this way, serial communication is adopted to transfer the data between the MCUs. The protector and substation system are connected by the ETHERNET for high-speed data transfer.
