The Research And Strategy Of Adaptive Reuse Of Old Buildings

Today, with the rapid development of economy, many cities are changing their original functional structure to match the new position in China. The structure of cities and the form of buildings in our country are changing quickly. In the future one or two decades, our architectural market will transform from the "Constructing Era" to the "Restructure Era". The reuse of old buildings, with the character of "Adaptive Reuse", will catches more and more eyes.Now the architectural scholars and officials pay more attention to the urban renewal. However, the micro-level urban renewal - the reuse of individual building - has not been researched broadly and emphasized greatly in China. Compared with other countries, the different social situation, economic level and cultural background considered, China has wide gaps in the motivations, concepts, technologies and policies. The purpose of this thesis is to introduce the theories and practices of architectural adaptive reuse, to explore the developments, significances, strategies and methods of this practice, to point out the difficult and embarrassing position of reuse in our country, and to give some constructive suggestions and solutions.The thesis consists of seven parts:The first chapter introduces the concept and the range of adaptive reuse.The second chapter introduces the developments of adaptive reuse and concludes some successful experience and theories in western countries.The third chapter analyzes the values of economy, environment, history, culture and society of adaptive reuse, and explores the basic principles and strategies of investments and design process. The forth chapter introduces many successful reuse examples to embody the concept of "functional conversion", focusing on the sorts and architectural design methods of adaptive reuse.The fifth chapter investigates several main problems of our adaptive reuse and points out some constructive suggestions and possible solutions.
