If a city loses the traces of history and culture and loses the streets and buildings that carry cultural genes, then it is simply not attractive.Gulangyu under the great environment of tourism economy fever in the past 20 years, the commercial environment on the island has developed wildly, and the cultural environment has gradually faded. However, with the increasing demand for material and spiritual culture of the people, the overall business atmosphere of Gulangyu has also been criticized by arriving tourists.Gulangyu,as the world's material cultural heritage title, has its own unique advantages:more than 400 buildings with historical and artistic values form the core of Gulangyu Historic International Community. The adaptive reuse design of buildings,on the one hand, preserves the common memory brought about by the historical space. On the other hand,it connects the building to the modern one, making it not only as an exhibit but also as a space. Then, how should we deal with the contradiction between the old and the new,and how can we integrate new elements into the old form and the old spirit? The purpose of this paper is to analyze the theoretical research and examples of the adaptive reuse of buildings at home and abroad as a study of the development status, significance, strategies and means of the reuse of historic buildings in Gulangyu. The dissertation is divided into four parts:The first chapter is the introduction of this article. It mainly discusses the research background, research purpose and research significance of this dissertation, basic concepts and research methods, and research framework. The second chapter is adapted to the current architecture. The relevant literature research and examples were analyzed and discussed, and the advanced experiences and methods of adaptive reutilization in historical buildings and neighborhoods around the world were discussed. The third chapter carried out relevant investigations on the Gulangyu buildings, comprehensively analyzed and collated the current situation of the reuse of buildings, proposed some inadequacies and solutions for the current reuse of Gulangyu buildings, and explored the sustainability of Gulangyu communities as a world cultural heritage.Direction of development. At the end of the third chapter,an actual case study and analysis of Gulangyu excellent building reuse case was made. The fourth chapter is the design practice of the author's retrofitting of Gulangyu old buildings in 2017.The design content is to transform the No.87 Hotel in Quanzhou Road into an artistic and creative space that integrates artistic creation, cultural exchange, and commercial forms. The fourth chapter starts from the basic situation of the project and the building, expounds the design principle and design goal of the author's transformation of the project. The architecture of Gulangyu hosts the history, culture and memory of the community. This is an emotional and cultural foundation that cannot be surpassed by ordinary architecture. It is also a space that blends retro feelings, nostalgia, and historical and cultural experience. These memories are communicated to people nowadays, and the use of architectural space design to mobilize people's sensory perceptions and encourage experience is the key to the design of the designer as an adaptive re-use site for Gulangyu buildings.
