Two critical problems confronted in reservoir optimal scheduling procedures are to convert a real optimal scheduling problem to an appropriate mathematical model and to construct a best optimal technique for solving this model. Interval optimization in interval analysis is proper to solve nonlinear programming problems with restrictions, which most of the reservoir optimal dispatching models belong to.An interval optimization approach is introduced in modeling of reservoir flood operation by the description of interval mathematics. A method of interval optimization in solving reservoir optimal dispatching model is introduced and developed. Two methods of new interval optimization are introduced which created by combining the interval optimization method with the large system resolution-coordination technique and the progressive optimality algorithm (POA). In the case of Guxian reservoir programming, these new methods are adapted. It is indicated that interval optimization approach is efficient in solving reservoir flood control problems. Expansion of this approach to other types of reservoir optimal dispatching areas is also available.
