Longshou Hydropower Project (LHP) is located at Black River, Zhangye, North-west China. The dam site belongs to large temperature variation and high seismic area. The average temperature is 8.5℃, the highest temperature is 37.2℃, the lowest temperature is -33.0℃ the seismic intensity is 8 degree. A lot of structure problems are to be solved for the construction of RCC arch dam under such condition. As the chief designer, the author of this theses has conducted the following researches and practices:(1) According to the engineering geology condition and hydrology condition, the breakthrough in the structure design of RCC arch dam has been achieved.(2) According to the topography condition, the artificial abutments scheme is proposed. The concrete quantity being chosen as optimal goal, the dam body is optimized.(3) Through the comprehensive consideration of temperature control and material property, the cracking control, freezing prevention, and earthquake resistance measures have been studied.Compared to the former RCC gravity dam design, the RCC arch dam design proposed by this thesis has the following merits: the concrete saving is 140,000m3 ;the foundation excavation and treatment quantity is decreased considerably; the investment saving is 50 million RMB; the construction period shortening is half year. The construction of the RCC thin arch dam of LHP shows that the RCC dam can replace conventional concrete dam in most cases. It also provides successful experiences for the RCC dam construction in large temperature variation and high seismic area. Therefore, the financial and social benefits are obvious by these researches and practices.
