In recent years, with the sharp development of economy and the steady increase of people's living standards in our country, the private purchase of cars has become a new hot point in the domestic market. The coming of car into family is the inevitable consequence of the development of the society and the economy, and the trend can't be stopped.However, due to the poor prediction of the development of motor vehicles in our country and the long time neglect to the design and the construction of parking facilities in urban residential areas, parking problems in most Chinese cities become increasingly outstanding day by day. To urban designers, how to solve this problem is an immediate duty.The paper aims to solve the parking problem. Firstly, the paper analyzes the correlated elements pushing the car increase in our country, sums up the current condition of car development and urban traffic, and briefly comments on the influence of car development on urban construction. Then, the paper reviews and summarizes the theories and practices concerning parking problems in western countries, and borrows the experience and lessons of car's development in these countries. Secondly, after investigating some urban residential areas in some key Chinese cites, collecting and analyzing the data, the paper also finds out the major parking problems in urban residential areas and the causes to them. Last, the paper probes the countermeasures and solutions to the parking problems in urban residential areas from the two aspect of parking index and parking facilities.The paper adopts the approaches of on-site investigation and data collection. The paper borrows some results and conclusions from some researches, but the more important is the possible settlements acquired through on-site investigation and data collection. The basic aim of this paper is the effort of trying to find out the relative theory and technological support to the construction of a great quantity new urban residential areas in our country.
