Versatile Space Research On The Adaptability Of Space And Design Strategy

In the threshold of the new century, China is experiencing economic booming. There are vigorous construction activities almost in all the cities. In some construction processes which speed is thirstily expected, only the request for current functions is considered, while the request for future function development is ignored. The urban and building spaces in these projects lose their value in a short time, which is a waste of limited resources. Economic booming also results in fast change of social and economic circumstances. It's hard for the developer and the governors to make accurate decisions. The urban and building spaces also lose their values because of bad decisions.It's one of the important reasons space and natural resources are wasted that urban and building spaces don't accommodate function changes. The research on building adaptability is valuable in the current situation. There are various ways to access adaptability of buildings, such as technology, legislation, decision-making management, and so on. The idea of versatile space is introduced in this paper, and the research is based on the idea of space. The adaptability of buildings is discussed in the scope the space design.Most of the contemporary research on the adaptability of buildings focuses on residential buildings, while versatile space expands the research to a more wide scope of generalized space, which also includes the exterior space of buildings and the urban space.The adaptability of urban and building space is discussed based on the idea of generalized space. The focus is on providing the possibility of change, not the idiographic way to change. Some former similar research takes "changeable" as a method to provide adaptability. This paper will try to answer why it's changeable and how to design to provide the possibility of function changes.The idea of versatile space is introduced by analyzing the relationship of space and function and contemporary researches on adaptability reviewed. The theory background of versatile space and its significance are illustrated in the paper. By analyzing the factors in the reaction of space and function, the design strategies of versatile space emerge. In the end, the proper way to use the strategies is demonstrated.
