It is the target of the modern railway to reduce journey time and increase the riding comfortability in the world. In our country, many railways that were built in mountainous area have heavy gradient and curves with small radius. The radiuses of curves limit the speed of train. The tilting trains can negotiate curves faster than non-tilting trains and keep the riding comfortability. It is an effective means to increase the ability to compete in transportation market.Power-distributed traction mode is the trend of the development of tilting train because it can reduce axis load and improve curving performance. For power-distributed tilting EMU, in order to make the normal contact between pantograph and catenary, it is necessary for pantograph to tilt while carbody is tilting. To develop the tilting EMU has vast prospect in China because eletrified railway has giant ability of transportation, low cost and no pollution to environment. Now little thing has done for the research on pantograph tilting system of tilting EMU, so the job has academic and practical significance in our country.The status of research on pantograph tilting system of EMU abroad is described in this paper. The structure and principle of. pantograph tilting system are introduced. The control mode, supporting structure and act mode of pantograph tilting system of EMU are discussed.Considering the applying status of tilting train in China and the trend of the development of the pantograph tilting technology, the passive pantograph tilting system based on four-linkage mechanism is presented. The pantograph tilting system is designed according to requirment of carbody tilting and rolling stock gauge.Based on the technical specifications of the contact between pantograph and catenary, the request of kinematic of the pantograph tilting system is presented. The four-linkage tilting mechanism of pantograph is optimized to match the four-linkage tilting mechanism of carbody. The track of the middle point of contact strips is analyzed.At last, the geometric model of the passive pantograph tilting system based on four-linkage tilting mechanism is build by the ADAMS software.The kinetics and dynamics simulation of pantograph tilting system are done according to the characteristic of the carbody's movement. And the parameters of pantograph tilting mechanism are optimized. The force, which acts on the pantograph tilting system, is analyzed and its influence to the bogie and carbody is discussed. The result is of practical significance in design of pantograph tilting mechanism.
