This thesis is based on the project, the automatic testing system of the electronic cabinet for SS4G locomotive. First, the principle of the fault diagnosis of the electron equipment and the theory of the automatic testing system were introduced in the paper. Then the automatic testing system and its fault diagnosis were discussed and applied in practice.By analyzing the working process of the electronic cabinet, the hardware model of the main circuit and the motor of the whole electronic cabinet testing, and its unique structure of the protection function test were discussed. The whole electronic cabinet testing could be divided into several functional modules according to the possible working states of the locomotive. According to the theory of fault diagnosis tree in the module testing, the faults on board could be located. The same method is also used in single board testing with which the fault in the unit could be discovered. Thereby in this way the process of fault diagnosing can be simplified and the diagnosis could be conducted more accurately and quickly. The software is programmed with the virtual instrument programmer of Lab Windows/CVI which offers a friendly interface to the tester to operate expediently. The hardware designed in modular structure simplified the design and maintainability, and also enhanced the expansibility of the system.
