The Guangzhou Pumped Storage Station is a large station which supplies security assurance to the operation of the Dayawan Nuclear Power Station and functions as peak modulation, frequency modulation and incidental reserve for the Guandong Grid. The water collecting area is 5km2 for the upper reservoir and 13km 2 for the down reservoir. The design flood is calculated according to the method carried out when no measured data is available.This paper contributes a general review of the research on the flood design in small watershed and studies the calculation methods including rational formula, experiential formula, unit hydrograph. The main formulas, the procedure, the applicable conditions and the analysis of the related parameters are detailedly discussed.The rational formula method and the unit hydrograph method are used and compared in the calculation of the design flood for the Guangzhou pumped storage station in this paper. The result shows that both methods are reasonable and qualified for the engineering design.
