The excitation system of synchronous generator was the important element of control system of synchronous generator. Its primary mission was to control the constant of generator terminal voltage by regulating the direct current of generator exciting winding and made it maintain a constant level . In order to realize this purpose, we must regulate the exciting circuit of generator any time according to the magnitude and property of the load. Obviously, the regulating process could be realized only by automatic excitation control device.With the development of electric power system and advancement of technology ,the demands for synchronous generator excitation equipment were increasing. At the same time, with the development of large-scale integrated circuit technology and computer technology, microcomputer-based excitation controller would become the main stream of excitation controllers in the future. At present, the electrical power system was developing the big gigantic scale dynamo on the base of saving the energy and reducing the wastage. But on the base of protecting environment, from now on the small and the middle water electric power would be developed, so the auto excitation regulator fitted for the small electrical power had the great market potentialities.The article discussed the characteristics and development condition of microcomputer excitation device on medium and small sized synchronous generator, analyzed the principle of microcomputer excitation regulation and realization method, and put forward the design ideaof miniature synchronous generator automatic excitation device based on AT89C52. On the base of which, this topic developed the hardware system and software module of excitation device.The system adopted AT89C52 microcontroller as the main part of automatic exciting device. The development environment was very mature, It could complete the following functions: data acquisition, computing control, modifying controlling parameter on-line and displaying terminal voltage and circuit, etc.The exploit of microcontroller adopted C-51 language. C language was a kind of structured programming language, it had many characteristics of other high-level languages. Translating software using C language could shorten development cycle and increase efficiency. Software exploitation adopted building block design, its commonality was good and easy to improve and expand. So we could develop larger-scale system with more perfect performance.The system had many advantages. For example ,its volume was small, reliability was high, special use was strong, and its price proportion was ideal, etc. It was proved by testing that, itcould satisfy the control command of medium and small sized generator, it fitted for medium and small sized electric power plants.
