Public Participation In Urban Design

Currently in China the practice in urban design is in the ascendant, yet we can't blench such reality: the production of the urban design in our country can't be often brought into effect, thus easily turn into apparentness and formalization. This problem always puzzles us. In contrast with the experiences of the urban design in developed countries, the reason consists in the lack of a whole system for guarantee in urban design, so it is difficult to ensure the scientificity for establishment and the validity for actualization. Corresponding with the characters in urban design - "sociality" and "exoteric", public participation is the part and parcel in this complex system. Based on the course and experience of the west-developed countries in urban design participation, this particle studied the participation by the numbers. It included the base of theory, the form of principal parts, the attributes and the limitations and methods in the application. In the course of discusses it established the frame of urban design participation. At the same time, in the face of such realities as the persistent development of socialism-market-economy, the recognition of droit and individual duty, this article analyzed the particularities and difficulties in participation, and searched the adaptive countermeasures. It aimed at promoting the system construction and favorable development in urban design participation, and redounding to constructing the system for guarantee in urban design in our country.
