The shortage of water resources has enormously restricted the social and economic development of many northern cities in China. In order to ensure the sustainable development of northern cities, the sustainable use of water resources should be attained. This paper studies on the sustainable use of water resources in Taiyuan city. The main measures are presented as follows:1. According to the total strategy of water resources use in China, exploiting water resources positively, preserving water and soil, utilizing rainwater, clean production, reuse of treated wastewater and other measures should be taken. Meanwhile, the price of water should be adjusted to achieve science adjustment, optimum arrangement and integral regulation of water resources. Many studies have predicted the amount of water request in China, and the predicted amount is obviously a little large. Therefore through enforcing request control and increasing the efficiency of water use, the limited water resources can be used to promote the sustainable development of economy and society.2. Though re-correcting the calculation methods of request prediction and enforcing the quota of water use according to the different years, a new model concerning water supply and request was built. Taking into accounts the quality, quantity and price of water, this model can be applied to adjust the use of surface water, underground water, foreign diverting water and treated waster-water, to distribute water resources reasonably and to ensure the sustainable development of society.3. The strategies, which should be taken in Taiyuan city, include exploiting new resources, treating waster-water and saving clean water. Thus, the benign recycle of water resources and its sustainable use can be attained.
