The paper reports the results of investigation for the operation condition of the ball-mill coal-pulverizing system of 100MW and larger power station. Based on the analysis of the ball-mill mechanism, the problem was found that the energy consumption on empty load of ball mill is more than 90% of the total energy consumption and the small iron balls that has lost mill ability and the iron component in the coal increased the mill's energy consumption. Thus automatic ball filter equipment was developed and installed in the ball mill of 50MW, 100MW, 200MW, and 300MW unit separately. The experiments show that the ball mill energy consumption decreased obviously after the equipment being installed. A further improvement of the ball filter equipment is brought out.
