With the expanding use of many new technologies on electric power systems, the scope of power network becomes larger and larger. At the meanwhile, more and more algorithms are needed in calculation, and old methods used to write programs cannot meet current needs at all. To reduce the dependence on date and let researchers put their hearts into optimizing the algorithms instead of data, algorithms based on graphic platform are needed. However, the users have to spend much time on corresponding electric facilities with geometric graphs after finishing drawing those graphs, which indicates low work efficiency. Fortunately, the emergence of unified graphic database helps solve this problem. After an integration of graphs and database, each attribute is a facility with real property and can finish any real operation on graphs. What's more, the auto-definition of attributes and their property helps enhance the users' self-adaptability and extend-ability. Since a graphic interface is a vital part of an auto-dispatching system, to develop a unified graphic database is a tendency for an electric power system.In this paper, we first explain the importance of research on the platform of a unified graphic database, which dismisses the users from trivially dealing with data. Then we introduce the advantages of objected programming in software coding, the wide use of computer graphs in electric power systems and the basic knowledge about graphic design based on WINDOWS. The solution to graphic scintillation is detailly discussed. We mainly study the total train of thought on building a platform of a unified graphic database. Some ways to design and realize key techniques are presented. And those key functions, such as creating the attributes, their snatching and determining, erasure movement, revolvement, shrinking-and-amplifying, auto-snatching, mirror image, the total shrinking-and-amplifying, are stressed and some relevant examples are given. Finally, we precisely introduce the process to realize a relay protection system on the platform of an unified graphic database, and then give the solutions and codes for an example from software to a graphic platform.This paper has both theoretical and practical meanings to research on an unified graphic database. The implementation of this kind of systems will make up the blank in the field of relay protection in Jingzhou electric bureau and is superior to the other same level systems in our country.
