With the rapid development of electronics technology, computer technology and communication technology, a higher requirement is brought forward on functions and capabilities of the telecontrol communication system. It has been a trend to transmit power information based on network. Because IEC 61850 has the advantages of hierarchy, uniform object-oriented modeling and adaptability of different networks and so on, it has been selected as the base of seamless telecontrol communication architecture. This paper analyzes the IEC 61850 standard and discusses the migration from the exiting communication system supporting the traditional telecontrol protocol to the future networked seamless telecontrol communication architecture. It also puts forward a method of connecting the substation to the seamless telecontrol system by a protocols conversion gateway. Because IEC 60870-5-101 and CDT have been widely used in power communication system, we focus on the conversion from IEC 60870-5-101 and CDT to IEC 61850 and the modeling problem of IEC 61850 standard applied to power telecontrol communication.
