Further Recognizing The Theory And Practice Of Urban Open Space

This article focuses on the open spaces in the city and brings out one new concept on open space, which is based on the eco-city and the sustainable development city in nowadays. Open space is always one of the most important concepts in the city planning theories. It has been used on the practices of the city development for hundreds of years since it was mentioned in the western countries. It was initially used to control and relieve the urban environmental worsen caused by the industrialization. According the development of the times, the functions and meanings on open space are becoming more and more complicated. And the study on it is also becoming actively explored and practiced. On the urban construction and sustainable development, open space is playing a significant role on the urban eco-environment. Furthermore, open space forms the city identity and the image of urban landscape; promote civilian health and social harmony through conforming humanistic concourse and space. Since western city planning theories have been introduced and widely used in China in 1980s, the series of progress and achievement have been improved on the theoretic and practice. Open space has strong relation with the divers areas in the city's physical environment: city greenlands, city squares, city roads as well as various departments and fields: urban planning, architecture/landscape designing, environment organizing, agriculture and forestry projects. Because of those issues, the complication and uncertainty are most important characteristics on open space. The author believes it will be a thriving issue about the further study of open space, which will be helpful for solving the development and environment problems and upgrading the city planning and construction. To link to the open space's original coming, the conceptual developing, the theoretical studying, the city planning and the practical analysis, this paper focuses on the characteristics, the functions, the influence elements, and the hierarchical spatial structure about open space, and builds the framework on urban open space structure. Based on the development situation and future planning of the Nanjing open spaces, this paper provides the study of urban open space.
