Scanning tunneling microscope (STM), one of the most effective and important means of testing and processing in nanometer technology, is receiving increasing popularity in application with the rising of nanometer technology. Besides the stability of the instrument itself, the quality of the re-built pictures, the simplicity of its operation, the expansion of its application sphere and the trend of becoming an industry is being more and more concerned. This dissertation is based on the foundational principles of the STM and the shortages in the procedure of developing and applying of STM.IPC-205B. We mainly investigate the imaging and performance of IPC-205B typed Scanning Tunneling Microscope, and discuss its insufficiency detailedly. By comparing and analyzing, this dissertation proves that there is feasibility to improve performance and add new function for the machine. Many experiments were done to test the resolution of STM.IPC-205B, more application experience and evolution are gained. This does not only expand its application but also make it easy to get popularization and industrialization. This dissertation mostly concerns the imaging technology and performance of IPC-205B, such investigation are carried out in order to improve the performance, system operation, stability and resolution. The dissertation is begun with principle of STM, the system structure of STM.IPC-205B is introduced, and the imaging technology and performance analyse of STM.IPC-205B are studied detailedly. The investigation of imaging include imaging principle, image-display, image-process and image-explanation. The performance study involve characteristic, scanning resolution, factors of performance influence and scanning experiments by STM.IPC-205B. In the last, we discuss the applications of STM.IPC-205B in recent years.
