City in certain form reflects and suits certain life style and population quantity, when modern people's life style, the population quantity already have occurred great changes, they can't be contained by this kind of old space pattern. Thereupon the people start new constructions which can satisfy, or seems that can satisfy this kind of new change and the request to substitutes the historical districts, the historical environment, and therefore has caused the large-scale city relocation, historical block vanishing, also at the same time has caused the people' attention to the importance of historical district protection. But is this new way of construction therefore wrong? This way is under criticism because of the demolishment it brings, but except this what else way can be? While historical districts being preserved, people's life style can't be, neither is can it hold the current population quantity, thereupon the function of historical district has to be changed, formerly the place for common people is now protected as place for leisure and sightseeing, e.g. Shanghai's new world, what means do such protection way have except commercial value?Right and wrong is not permanent, and changes along with the time's fly. What can't be denied is that sometime in the future, such construction way will be considered unsuitable, but in the present stage, it has its rationality inevitably. However in the new construction, what to be preserved is the question that should be studied. The guiding viewpoint of this dissertation calls for the preservation of the pattern in which the history forms, instead the historical external form.Under the guiding of the viewpoint, this dissertation takes the exterior space of historical district as the research object, to study the exterior space of historical district which forms by the way of "bottom-top" by the research method of "top-bottom". And this also inevitably involves the study of the historical district as the whole, which consists the exterior space as the part. To discover the rules and patterns of which the exterior space forms, and then analyze them by the theories of the pattern language and mathematics, and thereby form the pattern language which can be guidable in the new construction. However the deeper significance of the research lies in that to regard the history as pattern, instead of fetter, and to continue the context of history by the pattern in which it forms, and enables the new construction to have more widespread development space.
