| As a specific component in the city, the downtown area plays an important role inthe normal operation of the city. It may also sensitively reflect the status of the urbaneconomical, social and cultural development. The present paper elaborates on severalfundamental issues concerning the importance of downtown areas. In addition,emphasis is put on the updated theories related to this topic. Then two essential factorsin the process of regenerating the city are proposed—the functional structure andspace forms. Based on a historical analysis, a research is conducted on thedevelopment of the functions of traditional downtown areas, and also theirsignificance in the regeneration of downtown areas. Thus a further revelation ispresented that in China's present situation, stress should be laid on the relations anddisharmony between functional structure and space forms in the process ofregenerating the downtown areas. Based on this recognition, a thorough explorationof all the elements in the space forms of downtown areas is made to demonstrate thetransformation of the functions of downtown areas as well as the interaction betweendifferent space forms plays a significant part in the regeneration of downtown areas.A case study of Guiyang downtown area is conducted to further discuss theimportance of functional structure and space forms in regenerating the downtownareas. Guiyang city is the capital city for Guizhou Province, and it is also an open-upcity for inner land and an important communication center, industrial base andcommercial as well as tourist city in Southwest China. Then a detailed and practicalstudy is made concerning the formation of Guiyang's downtown areas and areasonable mode for regeneration and transformation. Subtle researches are also madeon the blueprint of the transformation and planning of Guiyang's city centre district.All these analysis on the practical cases helps to come to the conclusion put forwardin the paper.
