With rapid development of the economic growth and car availability ofour country, we now come to confront a treatment question of crumb rubbertire. Studies showed that crumb rubber powder could improve the roadperformance of asphalt. Crumb rubber modified asphalt (CRM) combinescrumb rubber tire with the improvement of asphalt, which can reduce the costof modified asphalt and give it special capability. It is a material of energysaving, environmental protection, new product protection all rolled into one.The CRM and its mixture have broad prospects in road engineering.Because of unstable and unsolved questions, CRM was failed to largescale production and application. Activate the performance of crumb rubberpowder to improve the capability of CRM is of great importance.On the basis of the relevant research, microwave radiation activatetechnique was brought up. Then numerous experiments were conducted tolucubrate the performance of microwave radiant crumb rubber modifiedasphalt (MRCRM) and mixture. It beats up a new path to popularize CRM.Interactions between crumb rubber powder and asphalt were studied andgained a preparation technique. It shows as the follows. Crumb rubber powderwhose diameter is 80 meshes is proper to modify asphalt. The optimal contentis about 15%~20%.At temperature of 180℃, speed of 7000rpm, it needsshearing the modifier about 1h. Significance testing shows that crumb rubberpowder can improve the softening point and low temperature ductility butminish the penetration.Research has detected that the compatibility between crumb rubberpowder and asphalt, and the hotstorage stability of CRM was poor. Accordingto the characteristic of asphalt, microwave radiation activate technique wasbrought up to improve their compatibility. The performance effects of powerand time were investigated by orthogonal design. The result has revealed thatit has an optimal power and an optimal time (1000w, 60s).Conventional, unconventional and SHRP testing methods were adopted to evaluate the CRM and MRCRM and their mixtures, then the data wereanalyzed and compared. The result shows that the MRCRM is better than theCRM in terms of the high-temperature stability, low temperature performance,anti-fatigue and hot storage stability. The tests of mixtures validate the rule.SEM, EDS and swelling test were adopted to analyze the activatemechanism of microwave radiate crumb rubber powder. Modern analysistechniques such as SEM, IR, DSC and NMR were adopted to investigate thecrossblend mechanism of MRCRM. The avail of microwave radiate techniquewas well explained.The data and the production of the research contribute significantly to thetheory development and the practical application of CRM.
