Traditional rule based expert system (ES) has several disadvantages in knowledge obtaining and system creating. Case Based Design (CBD) is a newly developing partten of design reasoning in Artificial Intelligent (AI) area. It centers on solving similar problems with experience and method for solving previous problem, meanwhile, CBD overcomes the disadvantage of ES in knowledge obtaining. The requirement of using theory of design reusing for product innovative design is similar with the pattern of reasoning for CBD; mechanical design is an engineer area which has weak theory model and abundant experience knowledge ;specially, Computer Aided Design (CAD) plays an important role in this area day by day ,all these reasons lead to the fact that CBD is capable of being widely used in mechanical design.The process of part design contains abundant knowledge, such as function requirement, geometry shape, dimension parameter, technological requirement etc. How to reuse this knowledge so that the designer who is lack of experience can get benefit, which has important engineer-oriented significance. This paper is combined with the part design project of VE100,MAX from Shanghai cigarette machine technology center , utilizing Relation data base ( RDB) technique and secondary development current situation of Pro/Engineer Wildfire, and doing research on development of CBD system in the level of part case , finally, the author develops CBD verification system based on VC++6.0 for typical part.First, this thesis introduces basic theory of CBR , and studies many aspects of typical part design case , such as case representation, case retrieval, retain etc. Second, regards design code as case code in order to integrate the case with geometrical and non- geometrical information, and realizes the parametric modifying function for 3D solid model in the condition of Pro/E. Third, for the purpose of making true of system's aided design requirement, this thesis brings forward to create part design knowledge base(KB) with AI language CLIPS, and integrates the rule based KB into the system; finally, collects and summarizes the knowledge of shaft,gear,sleave, and a sample with ladder—shaft is shown in order to verify the correction of theory research.
