The production of Container Crane is a typical single part and small batch production mode base on customer order. Its design mostly is a variation design which requires large amount of design knowledge and experiences of past crane models for reference. By analyzing the structure and design process of Container Crane's Gantry as well as the design characteristics of Container Crane, a case template of Container Crane's Gantry has been created and a case base model with layered meshwork structure has been proposed in the paper. The paper studies the case contents, organization structure, expression methods and storage technologies for Container Crane's Gantry, and creates a case base with characteristics of layered meshwork structure. By utilizing the layered meshwork structure and the case based reasoning (CBR) technology, a layered multilevel retrieving algorithm for Container Crane's Gantry has been proposed. The similarity measurement method has been used in retrieving the Container Crane's Gantry case or its component/part case with maximum similarity degree in the paper.In the paper, by utilizing the SQL Server relation database system, the case base with characteristics of layered meshwork structure for Container Crane's Gantry has been created; based on Pro/E system platform, the graphic base of 3D solid model with feather-based and parametric characteristics has been created for Container Crane's Gantry; by using the VC++ integrated developing environment, the case retrieving interface of retrieving modular has been designed and developed; by further developing the Pro/E system, the case retrieving process and parametric modification process proposed in the paper has been achieved.
