| In the north of the long and narrow flatland between Canshan Mountains and Erhai, Xizhou Village lies in Daili Autonomous Prefecture of Bai Nationality, northwest of Yunan Province. Erhai region in ancient times was the birthplace of Bai Nationality of Yunan, and Dali serves as a cultural and economic link between Southwest China and Central Plains. As a traditional village hamlet in Erhai region, Xizhou has a long history and rich national and regional culture. The unique vernacular dwellings of Bai Nationality there reflect faithfully the historical course of change and development in Erhai region, especially in Xizhou village. The major emphasis of the thesis is on the study of traditional vernacular dwellings of Bai Nationality in Xizhou. With the natural, historical and cultural environment as the background, it makes a systematic, detailed and all-inclusive analysis of those vernacular dwellings from different levels such as traditional dwellings as a whole, building groups, individual buildings, and their details. Meanwhile, it explores the profound internal relationship among these different levels. By adopting an interdisciplinary, multi-level and systematic research method, the thesis throws light on the systematic study of old villages and hamlets. |
