A lot of bridges should be strengthened for some reasons of structure damage, ageing of material and so on. All these things normally happen both in the developed countries and developing countries. Arch bridges are important bridge type among the highway bridge and its ratio is 61% in China and 80% in northwest China. Thus, to study strengthening method about the exiting arch bridge has important signification of engineering application in China.Five models were designed and manufactured which had the same material and reinforcement ratio for this paper; one of them is used for compare ration; two are reinforced with bonding CFRP; the others are reinforced with bonding steel plates. Based on the experiments of the five models of RC arch bridges, RC arch bridges strengthened with different paste formats and initial loads are studied by experiments and finite element software. From the experiments, the number and width of fracture are obviously decreased, and pasting CFRP and steel plates laminates play important role in improving RC construction durability; But only strengthen vault, the bearing capacity can not improve properly, because of the critical section has been transferred. Vault and one forth-span are both strengthened, the bearing capacity can improve better. Pasting CFRP, the ultimate capacity of RC arch bridge of is lower than that of pasting steel plates.According to the experimental result, the nonlinear finite element software offers concretes mass element and the birth and the death capabilities are used in the analysis. Through comparing, the result of the finite element model calculating is close to the experiment result. A reference is offered by this paper for strengthening with CFRP or steel in the same type arch bridge strengthening practice.
