This thesis gives emphasis on the design of the general smart communication device of the satellite operation and emulation platform, and it is an important part of the platform. Serial communication is one of the most widely used communication technology in satellite components. However, to meet the requirement of mass data transmission, Ethernet has been widely used in the satellite operation and emulation platform. The smart communication device connects the serial bus to the Ethernet network, bridges the operation computer and the satellite components to realize high-speed communication.On the basis of deaply understanding the principle of smart communication device and serial communication protocl, and refering to many technical references, the general smart communication device of the satellite operation and emulation platform is implemented. The main contributions of the thesis are as following.The overal scheme of the smart communication device is determined. The ARM based embedded system and FPGA are used in the hardware design to realize the communication between Ethernet and serial channels. FPGA is adopted to replace the conventional exclusive serial communication integrated circuit and Verilog HDL is used to design the function cells of serial communication.With regard to the buffer storage of the module, a new method called two-lever buffer structure is adopted, in which the FPGA's internal RAM cells is the first level buffer and the SDRAM of embedded system is the second level buffer. Therefore, the depth of buffer storage and the number of serial channels increase greatly. In order to to restrain the common mode interference, high-performance isolation electric supply and photo-electricity coupler are employed. The safe and high-speed communication is realized.In the software design of the device, the driver of serial transmission child module and Ethernet server program is implemented under uClinux platform. The drivers of serial transmission child module is used to manage the data transportation between multiple serial channels and the Ethernet server based on TCP/IP protocol is used to implement the network data transportation. In the period of transportation, this smart communication device can be seen as transparent from the sight of the users.
