The disadvantage of FOS(Factor of safety) method in the slope stability analysis is discussed, that the reason of slope sliding is very complex. The paper presents the sliding line function and stress function of three failure principles--vertical body load acting, horizontal body load acting and strength reducing, with variation method. And the failure principle combined with the three conditions is also presented. The result is discussed with Bishop's Simplified Method. The location of sliding line in different failure principles is presented, and is compared with Bishop's Simplified Method result. The reliability of ordinary slope is presented based on the variation result with very simple graphic. The interior stability model and exterior stability model of Soil-Nailed slope is analyzed. The interior stability model, also called anchor model, the exterior stability model, also called retaining wall model. The general sliding function and stress function acting with complex failure principles is presented. The result of retaining wall model can also be used to the other gravity retaining wall. Finally, examples are presented.
