This paper is mainly about the design and the application of power syetem synchronous clock based on Global Positioning System(GPS).It includes the discuss of traditional method and the problem of time synchronization ;the development of synchronous clock based on GPS;the comparison of all kinds of methods of giving the right time and the choice of ultimate scheme;the implementation method or scheme of application of GPS synchronous clock in several fields of power system.Firstly,the paper analyses the requirement of time synchronization in power system automation,as well as the method and the problem of traditional time Synchronization, introducing the method of time synchronization based on GPS.Secondly , the paper analyses the precision performance of two kind of methods of giving the right time which are RS-232 port communication and pulse interrupt respectively .After discussing the problem of using the two kinds of methods separately, the integrative scheme of giving right time is brought forward,as well as analyses the influence of jamming , proposes the software and hardware methods of lessen and eliminate jamming . At the same time,the method of choosing the interval of giving the right time is introduced in the use of integrative scheme.Thirdly , the paper expatiates and analyses the composition of GPS and the principle of its time service and position service.According to the concrete request of the integrative scheme of giving right time,the scheme of hardware and software for GPS synchronous clock device is brought forward.Finally,the paper discusses the application method and scheme of GPS synchronous clock in power system ,such as traveling wave fault location,digital current differential protection of transmission lines,phase measure ,test of relay protection,etc.
