With the development of electric power system and wide application of microprocessor-based protective relays, a management information system for relay protection is necessary to establish to improve the level of fault analysis and the device management.Future electric power system face a growing demand of configuration information (meta information) that describes the process data, the automation device, and possibly the primary equipment.. In SAS(Substation automation system), while its control, monitoring and protection functions are performed, it should become a open system to implement the information sharing of equipments from different manufactures and to possesses interoperability. To meet the requirements,standard TEC 61850(communication networks and system in substations) has been defined by EEC TC57 as international standard, which represents future development trend. Substation relay protection system is an important IED with special function in the whole substation network and system, which should be designed according to IEC 61850.On the basis of analyzing the concepts of the information leveling, unified object-oriented modeling, data object self-description and abstraction of communication service mapping, etc., this paper expound how to use the model provided by standard IEC 61850 to build up object model of supervoltage protection IED from the aspects of functional definition, decomposition and allocation of application functions, object model of device and data object definition.IEC 61850 specifies SCL to describe the information model of substation IEDs. SCL is the substation configuration description language based on the Extensible Markup Language (XML). It is easily integrated into the Web technology. An implementation for a Web-based management information software for relay protection has been designed, information about relay protection can be accessed by related person by browser.
