Contradiction between deformation and bearing-capacity of flexible gear wheel of common harmonic gear drive can be thoroughly overcome by introduction of oscillating-teeth end-face harmonic gear, an advanced driving device based on common harmonic gear drive and oscillating teeth drive, and with advantages of large power and high transmission ratio.In this paper, structure and working principles of oscillating-teeth end-face harmonic gear, as well as its types and classification are investigated, based on statement on structure and development of oscillating drive and harmonic drive. Total meshing area of working meshing pair is given great importance with the researching work below being conducted.1) Possible factors on meshing area of working meshing pair of oscillating-teeth end-face harmonic gear are listed, from which the prime are extracted.2) Formulas calculating meshing area of meshing pair are deduced as per relationship between oscillating-teeth number and wave number of wave generator.3) With the comparison between the formulas calculating total meshing area of the two types of gears, namely, one type with its number of oscillating teeth can be contained by its wave number, and the other type which can not be, the more ideal type with the value of Z_O/U being non-integral number can be finalized.4) Of modified working meshing pair of oscillating-teeth end-face harmonic gear, changing disciplinarian is summarized and formulas on total meshing area are deduced, respectively.5) Total areas of meshing pairs before and after modification are compared for discussion on total meshing area variation and its influence on the whole system.6) Total meshing area of meshing pair of double-side oscillating-teeth end-face gear is investigated. Between teeth tops of end-face gears on two sides, there should be an angle π/Z_O staggered circumferentially; and between teeth tops of cams on two end-faces of wave generators, there should be an alternate angle π/U in order for the minimum value of total meshing area of gears on two sides being maximum.Furthermore, discussion and prospect on main subjects of further study on meshing pair of oscillating-teeth end-face gear lays a foundation for theoretical research on rigidity and strength of oscillating-teeth end-face gear.
